What is the qualification?

The Basic Expedition Leadership course is a national qualification, recognised and required by many organisations and local authorities, for leading groups into UK lowland areas, both in residential  and non-residential settings.

It also provides a fundamental starting block for further National Governing Body qualifications in outdoor activities.

Who is the qualification intended for?

The Basic Expedition Leadership course is for any person interested or involved in the:

  • instructing of basic outdoor journeying skills, in UK summer conditions (i.e. the Expeditions Section of The Duke of Edinburgh's Award)

  • leading of parties or groups in lowland areas
    (i.e. The Ramblers Association)

  • responsibility of others, particularly young people in the outdoors
(i.e. teachers, youth and community workers)

  • organisation of base or static camps
(i.e. voluntary and uniformed youth organisations)

The qualification also counts towards the Volunteering Section in all three levels of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

How long does the training last?

The Basic Expedition Leadership course is spread over three or four months, consisting of one non-residential practical and two non-residential classroom based training sessions (Sundays) and four residential weekends, including a two day, one night, final journeying expedition.

This fulfils the requirement for 90 tutored hours. The delegate must then supplement the training with a minimum of 30 hours supervised leadership experience, involved with a group in related activities.

Where is the training held?

All Basic Expedition Leadership course training is held in the Midlands area; all venues are easily accessible from the motorway network.

Find out more about the locations used here.

Please contact Dave Mayo to discuss arranging a Basic Expedition Leadership course for your group or organisation outside of the Midlands area.

How much does the training cost?

The cost of the Basic Expedition Leadership course is £175.00.

This includes all registration, tuition, residential and non-residential fees. Participants meet their own food, transport costs, and other personal expenses.

We are able to heavily subsidise the course by drawing down funds from the LSC (Learning and Skills Council). This also has the advantage that all delegates additionally complete, in tandem and at no extra cost, the Level 2 NVQ in Sport, Recreation & Allied Occupations: Activity Leadership.

To secure the booking, a deposit of 50% of the course fee is required. Details of how to pay this will be included in the confirmation email following your online registration. The balance of the course fee is due no later than 30 days prior to the commencement of the course in order to confirm the booking.

Full details can be found in our course "Booking Terms and Conditions".

What equipment do I need for the course?

A comprehensive equipment list is available to download.

All Basic Expedition Leadership course training weekends are based at residential centres where you will be required to lightweight camp. Some larger items of equipment will be needed i.e. lightweight tent, camping stove, etc., but often it is possible to borrow or share items with other delegates.

With the exception of maps, it is not anticipated that you will need to purchase additional items of equipment or clothing to participate.

Aqua3, the leading UK provider of durability maps, offer a 10% discount and free UK postage and packing to all participants on any of Chase Training Solutions courses.
