What is the qualification?

The Level 2 Award in Assisting in Basic Expedition Leadership (BEAL) is a nationally recognised qualification that provides an ideal starting point for learners who are aged 16 and over and who wish to develop their outdoor leadership skills, both in residential and non-residential settings.

BEAL is a practical qualification in which learners must demonstrate their ability to lead others. The aim of the qualification is to prepare responsible, motivated and confident leaders that can assist during expeditions in lowland countryside.

BEAL has five units of work including 12 hours demonstration of leadership:

Developing outdoor leadership skills

Plan, lead and evaluate a series of expedition sessions

Lead activities that promote environmental responsibility

Developing personal journeying skills

Developing personal campcraft skills

It also provides a fundamental starting block for further National Governing Body qualifications in outdoor activities.

Who is the qualification intended for?

The course is ideal for delegates aspiring to assist young people undertaking the DofE Expedition section, and those who wish to help in the support, teaching and leading of expeditions within the remit of the qualification.

Also, those who wish to assist with leading parties or groups in lowland areas (i.e. The Ramblers Association, DofE, youth organisations, schools, etc.)

The qualification counts towards the Volunteering section in all three levels of the DofE and, if undertaken over five consecutive days, qualifies for the Gold Residential Project.

Where is the training held?

All BEAL course training is held at Blackwell Adventure, Nr Bromsgrove, which is easily accessible from the motorway network.
